Police have arrested and charged a 21-year-old man accused of shooting a bartender during an attempted armed robbery at a strip club in Southeast Portland late Sunday night.
Daniel Paul Nesta was charged with one count each of Robbery in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Attempted Aggravated Murder in connection with the April 13, 2008, armed robbery of Soobies located at 333 Southeast 122nd Avenue.
Investigators believe Nesta spent about 90 minutes in the bar prior to pulling out a handgun and robbing the bartender. At the beginning of the robbery the suspect fired, hitting 27-year-old James Bennett, police say.
Bennett survived being shot six times, including in the hand and a lung, but survived and was released from the hospital.
"I don't know why I lived through this, I don't know why I don't remember like I should," he said. "At one point he put the gun down I went to grab it I couldnt feel my hand so he yanked back and finished off the rest of the bullets in me."
The suspect reportedly acted extremely aggressive and continued to threaten the victim as he was attempting to give the suspect money from the cash register.
At one point the victim was said to have tried to grab the suspect's gun from his hand but was not successful. The suspect then shot the victim multiple times and fled the scene.
