SALEM, Ore. -- Marion County commissioners have approved major expansion plans at the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center that may double the capacity for overnight guests.
Plans by the worker-owned cooperative near the Cascade Range town of Detroit includes adding dozens of new cabins for guests and workers.
The Statesman Journal newspaper reports the expansion project would also add a cafe, and include development of wind and solar energy projects and organic food production in greenhouses and gardens.
Much of the expansion is planned for about 40 acres north of the existing 86-acre Breitenbush village, which has rustic guest cabins, a historic lodge and energy-producing facilities.
The center hosts more than 26,000 overnight guests per year, more than half from outside Oregon.
