Belmont shooting victim struggling to survive

05:33 PM PDT on Friday, March 30, 2007

The man shot in the head at the Belmont Market in a quiet southeast Portland neighborhood during a robbery earlier this month will never be able to walk again, cannot talk and is struggling to survive, his wife said Friday.

Despite this, Tiffany Yeom said she feels no ill will toward Jimmy Kashi, the man accused of nearly killing her husband.

“I don’t have any anger, just hopefully there is no more things like this,” she said.

Chester Yeom, who is conscious, communicates with her and his two children by blinking his eyes. A trachea tube in his mouth prevents him from speaking but allows him to breath.

He remains paralyzed from the neck down and has suffered medical setbacks, including a stroke, since he was hospitalized in the neuroscience intensive care unit at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital nearly one month ago.

For the last several weeks, Tiffany Yeom has been trying to balance visiting her medically fragile husband and keeping the family’s business afloat by working in their store.

Chester Yeom has a bullet lodged in his spine. Doctors were unable to estimate when he might recover enough to leave the hospital and move into a long-term care facility.

In the meantime, Kashi has pleaded innocent. He appeared in Multnomah County court Friday morning. Police have said Kashi confessed to the crime.

A grand jury indicted Kashi on attempted murder, assault and robbery charges.

Three other suspects were also charged in connection with the robbery.
