Statement from OHSU regarding donated body
03:19 PM PDT on Monday, March 26, 2007
Oregon Health & Science University released the following statement Monday, regarding the body of R.J. Anheier, which was donated to science:
Dear editors:
For over 30 years, OHSU's Body Donation Program has adhered to the highest standards of integrity and respect and the situation with Mr. Anheier was no different. No mistakes were made by OHSU.
However, a few corrections need to be made to the Sunday, March 25, 2007, The Oregonian article:
1.OHSU did not pay for Mr. Anheier's body. In fact, OHSU does not purchase bodies. The county and the state may set fees to reimburse mortuary and funeral costs. Bodies are donated to the medical education program in accordance with the Oregon Donor Program, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, and state statutes.
2.Donated bodies to OHSU are not used for research, except when a family gives permission for certain medical conditions. The program is established for medical dissections as part of the medical and health education of students at OHSU.
3.For the record, Mr. Anheier's body was not dissected while it was kept at OHSU. There were no anatomy classes meeting this semester.
While OHSU had no part in the confusion surrounding Mr. Anheier's demise, we do extend our sincere condolences to his friends and family.
