Mayor Potter loses bet, forced to eat crow in Vancouver
11:02 AM PDT on Tuesday, March 25, 2008
Portland Mayor Tom Potter will be boasting about his new favorite city Monday -- except he’ll be across the river, in Vancouver.
Potter lost a wager with Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard last December and so as his prize, Pollard gets to hear Potter proclaim the 15 best things about Vancouver in front of the city council Monday night.
“It was a simple wager,” Pollard said. “The mayor who raised the most money for Operation Santa Claus while working the phones at KPAM would invite the less successful mayor to their city council meeting to list the 15 best things.”
Potter said he doesn’t mind “eating a little humble pie” for a good cause.
Operation Santa Claus raises money for military families in Oregon and Southwest Washington who are suffering financial hardships.
Potter raised $1,100 during the phone-a-thon but it was no contest. Pollard raised a whopping $22,000.
“I’m happy and gratified to say that more people called in to pledge money while I worked the phones then they did the morning Tom weas there, so we’re very pleased to welcome Portland’s mayor to America’s Vancouver,” Pollard added, rubbing it in just a bit. “I can’t wait to hear all the reasons why he loves us so much.”
Operation Santa Claus was created about four years ago. Since then, volunteers have raised over $500,000 for the special cause.
