Mill Ends Park in Portland is named as the world's smallest park.

Mill Ends Park sat in a planter in the shadow of Portland’s World Trade Center for the past year while Naito Parkway was under construction. But on Friday morning Mill Ends Park returned to its old home in the median of Naito Parkway.

The park measures two feet by two feet and many people walking by don't even notice it. It's listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest park.

“That’s it? That’s Mill Ends Park,” said a surprised Deborah Nesbit.

The giant sequoia blends in with its surroundings and other small potted plants in the courtyard of the World Trade Center.

Portland Parks and Recreation officials said despite the small size of Mill Ends Park, it has a large place in Portland history.

The park goes back 30 years when newspaper columnist Dick Fagan saw a hole in the ground on Naito Parkway and covered it up with plants. Fagan even wrote about the park in his columns.

“He claimed to have seen the leprechauns from time to time and got to know the whole family of leprechauns that lived there,” said Bob Downing with Portland Parks and Recreation.

And on this the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, locals say it is fitting the park with a touch of Irish is finally heading home.
