Shots fired at police in SE PDX; suspect caught

04:05 PM PDT on Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Police said they tracked down and arrested a gunman who fired at officers during a traffic stop in Southeast Portland Monday night.

Sergeant Brian Schmautz said it all started with police trying to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation and escalated from there.

Schmautz said the driver pulled into the Trader Joe's parking lot and a back seat passenger - later identified by police as Nicholas Ramon Onuskanich - jumped out of the car then shot at police.

The officers said they did not fire back because of the number of people in the area and nobody was hit. They also said the suspect fell down a couple of times as he fled from police.

The driver and another passenger in the car at the time of the traffic stop were questioned and released, according to Schmautz, and officers blocked off several streets around the area while searching for 24-year-old Onuskanvich.

A couple hours later, a tip led police to an apartment near the intersection of SE Holgate and 45th Avenue, where they said Onuskanich was holed up. Using a loudspeaker, police evacuated the area and then talked the suspect into surrendering just before 11 p.m.

Schmautz said there was already a drug-related warrant out for Onuskanich's arrest and now he will also face one count of aggravated, attempted murder.
