Snowpack predicts plenty of water after spring runoff

07:16 PM PST on Thursday, February 28, 2008

By KGW Staff

With this spring like weather we're getting it's tough to remember there's still a lot of snow up on Mt. Hood.

And all that water is going to have to come down at some point.

It’s the third snow survey test this season. Hydrologist Jon Lea said since last time about three feet of new snow has fallen.

Snow and rain made for a heavy blanket of white over the rooftops in Government Camp.

The snowpack is 172 inches and holds about 75 inches of water.

"That puts it at 137 percent of average," lea said.

Not record breaking -- but Lea said lower elevations are breaking records which could pose flooding concerns.

“There's always a potential for high water we just want to get that lower elevation snow out of the system, so the days like were having right now with the relatively dry couple of weeks and warm enough temps to melt the snowpack is ideal.”

The Coast Range is at 274 percent of average, but lea said that snow is melting at a pretty good rate.
