According to police, approximately 50 cars and 8 to 10 tractor-trailer vehicles were involved in the series of collisions.

The incident began at about 3:30 p.m. at Denny Creek Bridge, 1.5 miles west of the summit of Snoqualmie Pass, according to Trooper Merrill. A chain reaction of collisions took place on a curve of the steep, icy section of road.

As a result of the accident, fuel was spilled and leaking into a nearby creek. An ecology crew was called to the scene to contain and clean up the spill.

I-90 eastbound was closed due to avalanche control and was expected to be opened by 6:30 p.m. I-90 westbound was expected to remain closed until about 8 p.m. according to Mike Westbay, WSDOT Communications Manager.
