Police: Hostage was in on standoff plot to ambush officers

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A man police tried to free from a 20-hour hostage standoff in Vancouver last summer is now charged with trying to murder a police officer in what investigators think was an ambush plot.
It all started on July 18, 2007, when SWAT teams were called to the home on NE 7th Street. There officers were trying to arrest Matthew Hastings for methamphetamine possession, and free Shane Runyon, whom were both barricaded in the house.
A relative told police Runyon was being held against his will.
While SWAT officers were finally entering the home around 3:30 a.m. the next morning, team member Cpl. Chris LeBlanc was shot under his left arm and, suffering a fractured rib and bruised lung. He underwent surgery and was expected to recover.

After weeks of investigation, detectives said they learned Runyon was actually an accomplice to Hastings and that the two planned to ambush officers at the home.
On Wednesday, Runyon was arrested and charged with four counts of attempted murder.
In December, police also said Hastings used a homemade shank to take another Clark County inmate hostage at the jail. That situation was resolved peacefully, officers said.
