Second bicyclist hit at NE neighborhood roundabout in 2 weeks
04:42 PM PST on Monday, February 25, 2008
A 16-year-old driver is accused of hitting a bicyclist in northeast Portland Monday morning and fleeing the scene, police said.
The teen will be cited. He was found about four blocks from the scene and taken into police custody.
He was driving with no license and no insurance, according to officers. His name was not released.
The cyclist, 39-year-old Dan Huish, had been riding his bike at a roundabout at NE 47th Avenue and Thompson Street.
He was transported to Providence Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.
Neighbor Vera Lutz heard the accident while walking her dog. The next thing she knew, a car took off.
"I seen the car as it was taking off, because it went, 'Vrrr.' That was it," Lutz said.
Recent crashes involving bicyclists
Earlier this month, a doctor who lives in the neighborhood was riding his bike to work on Northeast 47th at Brazee when a driver hit him in a roundabout just a block away from Monday's accident.
In both cases, police said the drivers were at fault.
