Rescuers in St. Helens save newborn baby found in toilet

ST HELENS, Ore. -- A newborn baby found in a toilet was brought back to life by fast-acting nurses and medics -- and now the mother faces an investigation by police.
It happened last Thursday at the Meadow Park Care facility in St. Helens when staff members found the stillborn infant just after noon. Nurses and medics were able to resuscitate the child and rush it to Emanuel Legacy in Portland.
Police said they think the mother, an employee of the care facility, tried to kill the baby and hide the body.
No charges have been filed against the 21-year-old mother, but state officials took the baby and her 3-year-old child into protective custody while police investigate.
“Heroes do exist," Sergeant Phillip Edwards of the St. Helens Police Department said. “If not for the courageous efforts of a suspicious co-worker, and a well trained nursing staff on scene, this would be an even more tragic story.”
