CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. -- A motorist stopped his car on the Bridge of the Gods and then got out and jumped into the Columbia River 145 feet below, the Oregon State Police said.

Police tape marks the location where the man jumped off the Bridge of the Gods.

Search and rescue crews were on the river for several hours Sunday but failed to spot a body. State troopers found personal information in the car that belonged to a 50-year-old man from Boring whose name won't be released until Monday. They also recovered a note left on the seat, Sgt. Julie Wilcox said.

A witness from a vehicle trailing the man's Toyota Avalon told investigators the car stopped in the northbound lane. The man then walked across the southbound lane and went over the guardrail without hesitation, Wilcox said.

Relatives of the suspected jumper told police they had last seen him at 11 a.m., roughly an hour before his car stopped on the bridge that connects Oregon and Washington about 40 miles east of Portland.
