PORTLAND – A 14-year-old boy was wounded by gunfire in a shooting incident that stretched over an area of about two miles.

The unidentified shooting victim was expected to survive with gunshot wounds to his stomach.

Lt. Kevin Modica with the Portland Police Bureau said emergency dispatchers began to receive multiple calls of a shooting starting at 2:22 a.m. Friday.

“It was a big challenging, but our officers do a great job and we were able to track it down,” said Modica.

Officers located the first crime scene at Southeast Powell and Southeast 122nd Avenue and then found another location near East Burnside and 148th Avenue.

"Investigators believe that at about 2:15 am, two groups of teenagers affiliated with rival Hispanic gangs became involved in an argument near the area of Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard. During the argument shots were fired," said Sgt. Brian Schmautz with the Portland Police Bureau. "Both groups fled the area in unknown directions. A short time later, one of the groups dumped a vehicle at the intersection of 148th Avenue and East Burnside. Occupants from the car fled toward nearby apartment complexes."

At East Burnside and 148th Avenue, an SUV was lodged on the westbound tracks used by MAX light rail trains. Modica said the shooting victim was in that vehicle, but did not say whether he was the driver or passenger.

The gang enforcement team was called out to assist in the investigation.

Just before 6:00 a.m. police officers reopened the blocked streets around the intersection of East Burnside and 148th Avenue and removed the SUV from the MAX tracks.

MAX blue line service was also restored, although TriMet said commuters may have experienced some minor delays during the early hours of the morning commute.
