09:40 AM PST on Sunday, February 3, 2008
A La Grande woman died Saturday afternoon when she lost control of her station wagon on Highway 237, near La Grande, and crashed into another vehicle, police said.
Highway conditions at the time of the crash were described as covered in snow and ice, and troopers were simultaneously dealing with multiple crashes throughout their patrol area.
The crash happened about 1:19 p.m. when a Subaru station wagon driven by Karen Kalac, 63, was traveling westbound on Highway 237 near milepost 5. Kalac lost control of her vehicle and crossed into the eastbound lane.
The Subaru crashed into an eastbound Dodge Ram 3500 1 ton pickup driven by Aaron James Rhyne, from Union.
Kalac was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rhyne was not injured, police said.
