Man who admitted to Fred Meyer hammer attack guilty but insane
05:59 PM PST on Wednesday, January 16, 2008
HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A judge Wednesday ruled that a Beaverton man who tried to kill a woman with a hammer is guilty except for insanity.
According to a psychologist the defense called on Wednesday, Eric Osterholme, 65, is delusional and thought police were conspiring to kill him, so he acted out in a bizarre attack.
"He was afraid police were going to set him up or going to send him to the hospital to fry his brain," said Dr. Richard Kolbell.
Osterholme will likely be sent to the Oregon State Hospital.
He admitted Tuesday that he tried to kill a woman when he hit her in the head with a hammer last May as she shopped at a Beaverton Fred Meyer.
On Tuesday, Osterholme, through his public defender, stipulated to the charges against him. But he asked the Washington County circuit judge to determine if he was insane when he attacked Sharon Weil at random May 12th.

Osterholme was charged with attempted murder, assault and unlawful use of a weapon against another. He is in the Washington County Jail on $250,000 bail.
Weil suffered a fractured skull but has recovered.
Paul Aubry of the Washington County Metropolitan Public Defender office had also said Osterholme has been mentally ill for many years and feared that Beaverton police were going to kill him.
