What began as a shoplift attempt turned into a brawl at a northeast Portland Fred Meyers store on Tuesday morning, police said.

Just before 10 a.m., a security guard confronted a shoplifting suspect who then pulled out weapons, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau.

The security guard tackled the suspect, who eventually escaped. The guard was injured during the scuffle, but was not attacked with the weapons, Schmautz said.

Police were interviewing witnesses. A suspect description was not yet available.
