Investigators said it appeared that the body had been there since around 6 p.m. Wednesday, when Murphy usually walks home from school.
Detectives said the driver told them he was aware that he hit something that night, but because of the dark and rainy conditions he had not seen what it was.
The driver said he stopped and walked back along the road, but without a flashlight he was unable to see very well.
Police said the investigation was continuing and were looking for anyone who may have seen a dark blue Chevrolet Avalanche the night of January 9.
