Drug dealers could put an end to free rides in Portland's fareless square

TriMet is considering charging riders in its fareless square, at least at night.
It says the free rides are attracting panhandlers, drug dealers and drunks who are making the rides threatening for other riders.
“We’ve seen an increase in the disruptive, intimidating behavior, especially at night,” said Mary Fetsch with TriMet.
The proposal would limit free rides from 7 am to 7 pm.
Right now, rides on buses and the light rail are free from downtown Portland to Lloyd Center.
Some riders want to keep it that way.
“If it were something that happened on a daily basis, I would completely understand but I don't see crime happening that often,” said Jessica Valdez who rides MAX daily.
But others say they think charging everyone will improve safety.
"Most people who take the bus down here are workers who are business people during the day. I don't want to be prejudice against anyone but it probably will slow down crime downtown,” said Julie Toporowski.
TriMet says it could save about half a million dollars by charging riders after 7pm. The money would be used for safety and security.
Public hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th.
11am-1pm at the Liberty Center Auditorium, 650 NE Holladay Street.
5pm-7pm Portland Building Auditorium, 1120 5th Avenue
