Cornelius man killed in icy head-on crash

Icy conditions early Wednesday morning were blamed for 16 crashes in Washington County and one fatality.

One man was killed in a head on collision on this icy Washington County road.
Fifty-year-old Brian Herinckx from Cornelius was killed in a head-on crash on N.W. Cornelius-Schefflin near N.W. Long Road when his pick up was struck head on by a Ford Mustang driven by 24-year-old Jose Louis Arroyo. Jr. from Cornelius.
A police investigation determined that the road was covered with black ice and Arroyo lost control of his vehicle, crossing the center line and striking the truck being driven by Herinckx head-on. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Arroyo had to be extricated from the vehicle. Herinckx was pronounced dead at the scene.

Temperatures that dropped just before sunrise created a thin layer of ice across Washington County on Wednesday morning contributed to at least 16 crashes in two hours, authorities said.

There were several crashes on Highway 26 as well as wrecks reported on Hillsboro Highway, Springville Road and NW 185th Avenue at NW Germantown Road.

In other accidents, a pregnant woman crashed into a power pole at Northwest Glencoe Road and NW Beach Road, about a quarter of a mile south of Highway 26. She was taken away by ambulance; the extent of her injuries was not known.
