Decision to add more police to West side MAX stirs controversy
04:22 PM PST on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
After weeks of talk, TriMet officials announced a plan Wednesday to add new police officers to patrol the West Side MAX line.
TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen said the five officers will work out of a bureau in Hillsboro.
"It will be staffed by and officer and a sargent from Hillsboro, two police officers from Beaverton, and one deputy sheriff from Washington County," Hansen said.
The move comes after a series of security summits last month, following several crimes committed at or near MAX stations in Washington and Multnomah counties.

Hansen said there will be another similar bureau set up east of Portland, likely in the Gresham area.
TriMet spokesperson Mary Fetsch said the west side officers would be on patrol by the end of the month.
The details for the east side bureau still are still being worked out, but Fetsch said TriMet hopes to have that bureau open by early February.
One TriMet director wondered why the east side bureau wasn't the first to open, since there had been more high profile incidents there.
That feeling was shared by Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis, who's been calling for more security on the MAX line for months.

"They should look at the statistics" when deciding which side of the Metro area should have priority in placing more officers, said Bemis.
TriMet directors voted to allocate $250,000 toward to help pay for the west side officers, and Fetsch said she assumes a similar commitment will be made in the Gresham area.
Still, Bemis said TriMet needs to do more.
"Five officers isn't enough as long as these things are happening on the platforms."
