PORTLAND, Ore. -- Amtrak service between Portland and Seattle may not resume until Saturday due to mudslides and flooding, but north-south freight train service could be restored sooner, as early as Friday afternoon, railroad officials said.

Passenger and freight train service was suspended on Wednesday due to mudslides. No decision has been made on when to resume Amtrak service.

Debris was being removed from the tracks between Portland and Canada, and resurfacing may be required in some area, Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson Gus Melonas said.

Railroad tracks between Portland and Seattle normally carry 60 freight and passenger trains a day, while about 15 trains use the line north of Everett, Wash., officials said.

Amtrak service north of Seattle to Canada also was suspended, with alternate transportation available. Two passenger trains that normally run from Los Angeles will start and make final stops in Portland until service is restored.

Amtrak trains between Spokane and Seattle were also suspended.

Officials said alternate transportation would depend on weather conditions.

Shutdowns affected Amtrak's Cascades Service, the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle, and the Empire Builder routes.

It will be available for booking by 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Jan. 10.
