A 14-year-old girl was crushed and critically injured when a pickup truck hit the SUV she was riding in, on her way to school in Salem Monday morning.

This is the pickup truck that hit the SUV.

The girl's mother and 15-year-old brother were also seriously injured, as well as the driver of the pickup truck, and the crash caused a ten-vehicle pileup near Interstate-5, police said.

Alma Garcia-Martine was taken to a Portland hospital with severe injuries.

It all started when the unidentified mom driving her two kids to school lost control on a patch of ice on Portland Road NE and slid into oncoming traffic. A pickup truck slammed into the passenger door of her SUV, where the 12-year-old girl was sitting.

Then, eight other vehicles crashed in a chain-reaction while trying to avoid the SUV collision.

In all, ten vehicles were involved in the pileup and six people were taken to area hospitals, including the young girl and her family. At last report, everyone was listed in serious condition, except for the girl, who suffered life-threatening injuries.

Portland Rd. NE was closed at the scene of the crash and would remain that way likely through the morning commute, police said, but I-5 remained open.

Cars and trucks were sliding off the roads elsewhere, too.

Many roads in and around Salem were icing over, including Highway 22. Drivers were urged to use extreme caution as driving conditions could be treacherous on some roads.
