This is the Volvo that Augusta was driving when he was involved in two accidents on black ice.

It happened just after midnight when Jeremy Augusta, 28, was driving southbound on I-5 and lost control on black ice. His car slid and struck the concrete center divider, then continued sliding into the southbound lane of the freeway.

It was snowing and foggy at the time, with very limited visibility.

Then, after returning to his car to maneuver it out of the way, Augusta’s Volvo was struck by a southbound SUV. A trooper who responded to the scene told KGW “as the Volvo spun around from the impact, Augusta was thrown from his car and landed on the highway shoulder in a ditch about 40 feet away.”

After the crash, the trooper said a silver van towing a trailer carrying bicycles struck both vehicles but continued southbound without stopping.

Augusta suffered serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg then on to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

The two people in the SUV were transported to Mercy Medical Center with less serious injuries, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers continued to investigate and hope the public may be able to help them pinpoint who was driving the unidentified van that left the scene. Anyone with information was asked to call OSP’s Roseburg Area Command at (541) 440-3334.

No citations were issued.
