A woman, who wants to be identified only as "Gloria," described a violent attack on a MAX platform at 181st and Burnside in Gresham.

She said it happened on Christmas eve at about 8:30 after she'd left a family dinner and was waiting for the train at the Gresham station, when a stranger approached her.

She says the man punched her, pinned her against him on a bench, then sexually assaulted her. She fought back and he eventually let her go.

"I kicked and kicked and kicked and screamed," Gloria said.

Gloria says she immediately called 9-1-1. Moments later Gresham police arrived and arrested the man, 34-year old Mario Santiago-Montelongo, across the street from the Max station.

Santiago-Montelongo has been indicted on a Measure 11 crime.

It was the third violent attack near a Gresham MAX station since November.

KGW report

Gloria is grateful the attacker is off the street, but worries about safety for others.

She wants to see TriMet officers at every station.

"If you're saying you're beefing up security than you need to do exactly that! Things would have been completely different that night had someone been there," she said.

TriMet held a "Safety Summit" late last year following two attacks on MAX riders in the Gresham area. It has 36 contracted law enforcement officers and plans to add another four or five officers soon. It also plans to add security cameras, and lights to Gresham Stations.

"Unfortunately we couldn't prevent this (attack)." TriMet Communications Director Mary Fetsch said.

She said TriMet has added more officers in the Gresham area and is taking every precaution to keep riders safe..

Gloria said she has seen officers on MAX since the attack.

"I just want to see them everywhere, not just Downtown, not just at Gateway where I see them a lot - I want them all along the line."
