PORTLAND, Ore. -- New leaders at the local and state government level began serving Oregonians Monday.

Portland Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams officially became mayor Monday at a Parkrose High School ceremony.

Adams was expected to deliver a speech outlining his administration’s vision and goals for the next four years.

The swearing-in was open to the public, with a reception and celebration to follow Monday evening at City Hall.

At the state level, a new Oregon attorney general was sworn in Monday morning in Salem at the Supreme Court.

John Kroger pledged to get up every morning “ready to protect the people of Oregon in and out of court.”

Gov. Ted Kulongoski, who also served as state attorney general, was on hand to make opening remarks.

Ben Westlund was sworn in as Oregon state treasurer and pledged to better educate the state on financial security and strengthen accountability for the financial sector.

Westlund said he intended to play a leading role in stewarding Oregon through the current recession.

"I will promote sound financial management to bolster Oregon's credit rating ... and strengthen the state's college savings plan to help Oregon families prepare for the future," he said.

Kate Brown was sworn in as the 24th Oregon secretary of state, along with Westlund, by Gov. Kulongoski.

Brown promised to visit each of Oregon's counties and to "take a good, hard look" at the state's initiative system.

Meantime, three new members of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners were sworn in to their new offices at noon.

Multnomah County Attorney Agnes Sowle swore in Deborah Kafoury, Judy Shiprack and Diane McKeel at the county building on SE Hawthorne Boulevard.

Each commissioner was elected to a four-year term of service.

On Tuesday, new congressional leadership for Oregon will be sworn in.

U.S. Rep Kurt Schrader and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley will both take the oath of office in Washington, D.C. Tuesday morning.
