PORTLAND, Ore. -- A woman was treated for a gunshot wound after a bizarre accident early Sunday morning.

Multnomah County Jail

45-year-old Alvert O'Neal Jr. was taken into police custody after his gun discharged, hitting and injuring a sleeping woman in the apartment next door.

Portland police were called to Legacy Emanuel Hospital Sunday after a 46-year-old woman was admitted and suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Sandra Howell told police she was shot while sleeping in her North Portland apartment about 4 a.m.

Investigators determined the bullet came through a common wall shared with the victim’s neighbor, Alvert O’Neal Jr., 45, according to Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Brian Schmautz.

O’Neal told officers he had thrown what he thought was an unloaded .380 semi-automatic handgun onto his bed when it discharged and fired into the wall.

O’Neal was charged with one count of third degree assault and one count of reckless endangering.

Howell's injuries were not life threatening.
