FLORENCE, Ore. -- This year's wild winter weather has caused plenty of damage in Oregon, but now it's also exposing treasures at the Oregon Coast.

One of those now visible is the Bella, a 121-foot ship built in the late 1800's.

The Bella, shipwrecked near the mouth of the Siuslaw River at the Oregon Coast, taken March 2008.

The Bella was used to haul lumber and canned salmon from Florence to San Francisco. It wrecked near the mouth of the Siuslaw River in January 1905.

State archaeologist Dennis Griffin says the wrecks of five ships already are visible along the south-central coast between Reedsport and Coos Bay, including the Bella, the Sujameco, the Sparrow, the Helen E, and the Olson.

Griffin says more ships may emerge from the sands this year along the stretch of Pacific coast long known as the "Pacific Graveyard."

Hundreds of ships have wrecked along the coast over the years, and winter wave action often exposes them.
