Man found guilty but insane in death of father
07:19 AM PDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008
EUGENE, Ore. -- A judge in Eugene has placed a man who fatally stabbed his father last winter in the custody of the Oregon Psychiatric Security Review Board for the rest of his life.
The man, 21-year-old Andrew Siegel, was charged with murder in the January 6 death of Martin Siegel, who was stabbed in the family's home in the town of Lowell southeast of Eugene.
In February he was judged unfit to stand trial but after several months of treatment corrections officials said he was able to assist in his own defense.
Siegel waived his right to a jury trial and acknowledged there was enough evidence to prove he intentionally murdered his father.
A psychologist wrote in February that the younger Siegel was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia as a teenager, and was taking anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety drugs but had no prior criminal history.
