PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland woman was arrested last Wednesday, after a hidden camera caught her stealing money from a room at the assisted living facility where she worked.

Washington County Sheriff's officials said on two different occasions, 23-year-old Quanecka Thompson stole money from a purse left by sheriff’s detectives inside a room at Regency Park Assisted Living, on SW Barnes Road.

Detectives worked with managers of the facility to install the camera, after multiple reports of theft within the living community.

"They set this up thinking 'well, let's see what we catch,'" said Sgt. Dave Thompson of the Washington County Sheriff's office. "It was very apparent that this person, Ms. Thompson, was taking money that wasn't hers."

A resident who asked not to be identified, described Quanecka Thompson as “nice” and “friendly.”

"I wouldn't think she would do it," said the resident. "She's such a good age and always so friendly and fun."

In a statement to News Channel 8, Regency Park's director said the company conducts criminal background checks on all employees before hiring them.

"It is unfortunate that a person that is able to pass this screening process could be tempted at a later date to be dishonest when the opportunity is presented," wrote Dan Lamey, Director of Operations for Regency Park Assisted Living.

Thompson was booked into the Washington County Jail on multiple charges including criminal mistreatment, burglary and theft. Bail was set at $40,000.

Sgt. Thompson credited a combination of good police work and management cooperation for collecting enough evidence to make an arrest in a case that he takes personally.

"Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable victims in our society and to steal from them is just not right," said Thompson.
