A former Hillsboro elementary school teacher found guilty of stealing a student's ski jacket and trying to sell it on eBay will not go to jail.

Liz Logan was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months of probation, which will involve 150 hours of community service, fees and fines. She may not have any contact with the girl whose jacket she stole, she may not go to Jackson Elementary School and she is prohibited from using internet sites such as eBay.

"We are very thrilled that she is not going to spend time behind bars," said defense lawyer Shannon Connall.

However, Connall said she wasn't entirely satisfied and planned to file for a new trial. Connall believes there may have been jury misconduct. One juror apparently said via e-mail that there were problems in the jury room and there was still a hung jury as of 5 p.m. the day Logan was convicted earlier this month of felony theft and computer crime.

The arresting officer in the case said Logan admitted to the crime.

However, Logan maintains the entire incident was a misunderstanding. She claims she never stole the $114 jacket.

Background: Teacher claims she was pressured into confessing

Logan initially told investigators she found the jacket in a lost and found bin at the school. She later changed her story, saying she bought the coat at a Goodwill store, according to Hillsboro Police Lt. Mike Rouches.

The teacher found a buyer offering $46 for the coat, which has a retail value of $114, but her dog shredded the jacket before it changed hands, Rouches said.

The incident occurred last January.

Logan resigned from her first grade teaching job at Jackson Elementary School last spring.
