HILLSBORO – A bicyclist who police say collided with a car last Friday died over the weekend after doctors removed him from life support.

Hillsboro police responded to a car versus bicycle crash Friday evening on SW Oak Street at SW 17th Street.

The driver of the car, Christopher Currens, 34, was eastbound on Oak when he noticed a bicyclist riding in the traffic lane, straddling the dotted line separating the fast and slow car lanes, said Lt. Michael Rouches with the Hillsboro Police Department.

As the cyclist got closer, Currens honked his horn and slammed on his brakes, according to police.

“The cyclist turned left into the car as Currens attempted to avoid the crash,” Rouches said.

Kerry Alfred Teufel, 47, hit the front of Currens' Ford Focus and flipped into the air.

Currens and passers-by attempted first aid and called police. Teufel was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with serious head injuries.

Witnesses told police Teufel was wearing dark clothes, was not wearing a helmet and was very difficult to see, since he had no reflective gear or lights.

Doctors removed Teufel from life support on Saturday.

No citations or arrests were made in the case.
