Public swimming pool in NW Portland closed due to leaking

While the weather is just right to take a dip in a swimming pool, residents of northwest Portland now have no public pool.

It’s the swimming pool in the basement at the Metropolitan Learning Center, also know as the MLC School, near Glisan and 20th Avenue.

The pool has been there since 1905 and many residents say it's a big part the area’s history.

The pool is off limits to swimmers now, after Portland Parks shut it down when it started leaking.

Matt Shelby with Portland Public Schools says the pool is now leaking up to 600 gallons a day, which has dropped the water level by about a foot.

He said the level needs to be much higher in order for the pool's cleaning system to work.

The district says for the time being, the pool area will be off limits until they can get the funding to fix it -- something that the district says could take years.
