Phony sex offender notice posted in Washington County
05:50 PM PDT on Friday, July 11, 2008
A phony sex offender notification was illegally distributed in the Cedar Hills area Sunday night, according to police.
The man listed in the notification is not a sex offender and has no prior arrest history. Detectives are seeking any information on the person or people involved in this crime.
Police say someone posted notices the night of Sunday, June 29, 2008 and in the early morning of Monday, June 30, 2008, that claimed to be an official notification of a “resident predatory sex offender”. The notices were distributed in the Cedar Hills area of Washington County.
The flyer was not created by any official in the Washington County government or by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, police say, and the information contained within it is false. The victim named as the predatory sex offender has never been arrested for any crime or been listed as a sex offender in any state.
The person or people responsible for distributing the flyer committed a criminal act that is being investigated by Sheriff’s Office detectives. The name of the victim in this case is being withheld during the investigation. Detectives are asking anyone who has any information, or who received one of these flyers to contact Detective Chuck Anderson of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 503-846-2704.
