At least 5 people displaced by house fire
09:37 AM PDT on Tuesday, June 24, 2008
At least five people were displaced Tuesday morning after a house fire in northwest Portland.
Smoke was billowing out of the Victorian home near 25th Ave. and NW Kearney St. when fire crews first arrived on scene before midnight.
At least five people live in the house which has been divided into several separate apartments.
The Red Cross helped one of the residents find a place to stay overnight, while other residents stayed with friends, said Battalion Chief Don Palmer with the Portland Fire Department.
One person did suffer minor burns, but declined medical treatment and was not taken to the hospital, officials said.
A second alarm was called after the fire began but crews were able to knock the flames down quickly and the second alarm was called off after about ten minutes.
It appears the fire started on the third floor, said Palmer, but investigators aren't yet sure how.
The house is older, it’s on a slope and all the homes are very close together, said Palmer, “which made it a very labor intensive fire to fight,” he said.
Flames did jump to another house in the back, but it did not do a lot of damage, said Palmer.
