Sauvie Island Bridge moving to Pearl
05:32 PM PDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Portland city commissioners have voted to go forward with the Sauvie Island Bridge move that will transplant the bridge into Portland's Pearl District.
A computer image of what how the transplanted bridge will look.
By this time next year, the Sauvie Island Bridge will span Interstate 405 at Northwest Flanders Street.
The project is expected to cost $5.5 million. The bridge will be used for pedestrians and bicyclists only.
The idea had earlier died from political resistence led by Mayor Tom Potter, who said the project is too expensive.
However, commissioner Dan Saltzman is now convinced the project is fiscally responsible, so he's siding with with commissioners Randy Leonard and Sam Adams to move the project forward.
Comment: Good use of $5.5 million?
On Wednesday, Adams argued the bridge will do wonders for bike safety.
Potter still thinks other parts of the city deserve more pedestrian and bike amenities because their risks are higher.

Adams has that promised the city will take on no extra financial risk concerning the project and that the contracts will only get signed under a guaranteed budget.
