After months of public outcry for additional safety, TriMet Tuesday opened a new police precinct on the west side of its system.

The new Westside TriMet precinct will be staffed by four different law enforcement agencies.

The precinct was approved by the TriMet board back in January.

Five officers from three law enforcement agencies will comprise the team. The Beaverton Police Department will contribute two officers. The Hillsboro Police Department will add one officer and one sergeant. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office will contribute one deputy.

The precinct comes in response to a series of high profile and violent attacks dating back to the middle of 2007.

In April, a similar precinct will open on the East side of the system.

The West side precinct will patrol from The Sunset Transit Center to the Hatfield Government Center in downtown Hillsboro.

The East side precinct will tackle service between the Gateway Transit Center and the Cleveland Avenue Stations.

The officers are directed to spend 70 percent of their time riding the system in search of unruly passengers and those who failed to pay fares.
