Man convicted in hammer attack sentenced to mental hospital

HILLSBORO – A Beaverton man found guilty but insane after attacking a woman with a hammer last spring was sentenced to a mental hospital on Tuesday.

Police say Eric Osterholme randomly attacked a woman with a hammer at a Beaverton Fred Meyer.
Eric Osterholme, 65, was to a maximum of 45 years with the possibility of early release by the state psychiatric review board when it determines he is no longer dangerous.
According to a psychologist and the judge in the case, Osterholme suffers from a delusional disorder that made him paranoid that Beaverton police were trying to kill him.

He randomly attacked Sharon Weil in May when she was shopping at a Beaverton Fred Meyer.
She was hospitalized with a fractured skull.
