Officers in Hazel Dell shootout identified
Deputies kill armed man in Hazel Dell shootout01:03 PM PDT on Monday, October 13, 2008
HAZEL DELL, Wash. -- Deputies shot and killed an armed man in Hazel Dell last week, police said.
Four officers discharged their weapons in the effort to subdue Robert Kenneth Miller. Clark County officials released their names Monday.
Deputies Todd Barsness and Scott Holmes and Detective Tom Dennison, all Clark County sheriffs, fired at Miller . Vancouver Police Department Detective Marshall Henderson also discharged his weapon.
Police said Miller, 43, had pointed a gun at his estranged girlfriend around 9 p.m. and threatened her at an apartment complex in the Hazel Dell area.
She was able to escape and called 9-1-1.
A manhunt began for the suspect, who had fled the scene, and deputies found him a short time later in the back yard of his half-brother's home. Deputies said he still had the gun.
“Negotiations began and after approximately one hour, shots were fired. The suspect was struck and died at the scene,” said Sgt Scott Schanaker with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Schanaker later told KGW that Miller fired the first shot and then a number of deputies returned fire.
An autopsy was scheduled for sometime Thursday.
An official report is not expected for several weeks.
