Cemetery vases recovered from accused metal thieves
04:00 PM PDT on Thursday, August 7, 2008
VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Portland and Vancouver detectives worked together to arrest two accused grave robbers, suspected of taking metal memorials to sell for cash.
Investigators said sometime in the first week of August someone stole around 100 bronze vases from Evergreen Memorial Gardens in the Arlington west garden, and the Veterans garden of the cemetery.
In addition, a Vancouver neighbor reported a statue stolen, and someone stole a bronze plaque from St. Joseph's Church.

On Tuesday Portland Police Bureau detectives arrested 19-year-old Derek Mayfield and 28-year-old Donald Milford for trying to sell the vases at a scrap yard.
A worker there decided the cut-up vases and statue looked suspicious and called police.
Officers and Clark County deputies were able to recover many of the stolen items.
Each vase was valued at $375.00.
