Man killed in fiery rollover Battle Ground crash
03:44 PM PDT on Monday, August 4, 2008
BATTLE GROUND, Wash. – One man died and at least one other person was injured when a pickup truck collided with an oncoming jeep on Saturday, authorities said.
The accident occurred at 25100 NE Rawson Road in the Brush Prairie area of Clark County.
When deputies arrived, fire personnel were already working on a fully engulfed vehicle fire and providing medical treatment to two people.
One person was already dead. He was identified as James Skelton, 30, from Battle Ground.
Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, it appears a Dodge Dakota pickup was traveling westbound on Rawson Road when it crossed over the dividing line and collided with an oncoming Jeep Cherokee, causing the Jeep to overturn and catch fire.
Witnesses and the driver of the Dodge pickup dragged the Jeep driver out of the burning vehicle, authorities said.
“Once the driver was pulled from the burning vehicle, the vehicle exploded, knocking one of the witnesses off of his feet,” said Sgt. Scott Schanaker, spokesman for the Clark County Sheriff's Office
Witness statements suggest the driver of the Jeep was not breathing prior to being pulled from the vehicle.
The driver of the Dodge was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center for his injuries. He was identified as Kenneth Pawski, 19, from Vancouver, Wash.
It appears alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this collision, Schanaker said.
