Vancouver gas station creates frenzy over free gas

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Some drivers in Vancouver were feeling lucky the morning of Friday the thirteenth as they waited in line for some free gas.
A Vancouver gas station teamed up with the Washington lottery to offer a free ten-gallon gas fill-up, for the first 200 customers who purchased a Washington lottery ticket.
The Albertson’s gas station on Northeast 20th Avenue, just north of the Interstate-5/205 Interchange, held the gas give-away Friday morning.
The first person in line, Jessie McKimens of Vancouver, arrived Thursday night to hold his spot in line, “I got here at 10:45. I’ve been up pretty much all night, so I’m kind of tired but it’s worth it,” he said.
“We’re trying to turn around Friday the 13th. It has a bit of a bad image. We thought if they got a chance to win a million dollars for a new raffle game and ten gallons of free gas to start the weekend off, it wouldn’t be bad,” said Jacque Coe with the Washington lottery.
The line wrapped around the parking lot at the nearby Albertson’s grocery store. With the purchase of the lottery ticket, the deal added up to roughly $2 per gallon of gas for drivers.
And they felt the wait was worth it, given the high cost of gas these days.
"Oh, it's really been an issue. Besides the car payment and the insurance, I work in Portland. I've just been spending, like double the amount of gas," said Lisa Banford of Vancouver, who waited an hour to put gas in her Ford Expedition.
The raffle ticket from the Washington lottery entered each driver into a million dollar jackpot.
