VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Vancouver woman accused of biting her son when he called 9-1-1 for help because she was driving drunk is hoping her attorneys can reach a deal with prosecutors soon.
Paulette Spears' lawyers have signalled a possible mental illness defense in the past. She faces several charges, including Driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and assault.

She appeared in court Wednesday morning and a new court date was set for April 30th. The judge and attorneys said a deal or resolution in the case was likely to be announced that day.
Spears was arrested in late October after she apparently tried to take the phone away from the 8-year-old boy as he called, and eventually bit his hand to get him to release the phone, police said. The woman then hung up on dispatchers.

Spears’ attorney said during a previous court appearance that her son and his five-year-old sister were now living in an undisclosed location and their mother was not able to have contact with them. She asked the judge if she could spend Christmas with her children, but the judge denied her request.

Spears previously pleaded innocent to the charges in this case.
