Great-grandmother tackles armed suspect at Camas KFC
03:24 PM PDT on Thursday, March 20, 2008
CAMAS, Wash. – Police captured an armed robbery suspect Wednesday thanks to a great-grandmother who chased and wrestled him to the ground, officers said.
Wednesday afternoon, a man with a knife entered the Camas Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and demanded money from a female clerk.
After she gave him an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect ran from the store and headed east, toward Washougal, said Mitch Lackey with the Camas Police Department.
The clerk called 911 and alerted the manager, who ran outside and spotted the fleeing suspect. She told two nearby people in cars and pointed out the suspect, who by now was running down H Street. The manager and the witnesses started chasing the suspect as police arrived.
One of the witnesses, who had been driving past the restaurant when the manager ran out, was 66-year-old Mary Chamberlain of Camas.
Chamberlain and her passenger, Sophia Morrow, followed the suspect.
Then Chamberlain pounced – she and the suspect wrestled on the ground as she attempted to detain him.
"I was just at the right place at the right time,” Chamberlain later told KGW. “I wasn’t going to let that happen in Camas.”
The suspect didn’t fight back, Chamberlain said. She kept telling him to give up and that police were on the way.
Within moments, two Camas officers arrived and took the suspect into custody. He was identified as 22-year-old Joshua G. Crowley of Washougal, according to police.
Officers confiscated the stolen cash and the weapon, which Crowley still had as he was arrested. Police found a wig and a hat believed to be his in a nearby garbage can.
Although officers credited Chamberlain’s involvement as key to such a quick arrest, and praised her bravery, police advise against such risky actions.
"Dealing with armed criminals can be extremely dangerous," Lackey said.
Chamberlian said she didn’t think about whether the suspect had a weapon.
She has 12 grandchildren and two great-grand kids.
