HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A man who was fired at when he tried to run over an officer was captured in Hillsboro Friday evening.

The suspect, identified as Shawn Hankins, 32, abandoned his truck and escaped on foot after the officer's bullet shattered his window late Thursday night.

Washington County deputies said Hankins was arrested near the Minter Bridge in Hillsboro around 5 p.m.

Investigators searching his vehicle found a “small amout of blood” that seemed to indicate he was hit with one of the bullets, according to Lt. Michael Rouches with the Hillsboro Police Department. Witnesses said there was also a small trail of blood on the sidewalk near the truck.

Initially police thought Hankins was holed up in a nearby home, but they later determined he was not there and continued a manhunt in the area surrounding the 800-block of Kathryn Street. Then, a little over an hour later, a woman who lives near Hillsboro High School called 9-1-1 and said there was a man hiding in her backyard and his neck was bloody.

Officers warned that the suspect could be in a desperate state and no one should confront him if he's spotted again. They shifted the search to the area near the school, Police dogs were also helping in the manhunt.

The entire incident began when officers responded to reports of a domestic assault around 3 a.m. at the home Hankins shared with his girlfriend on Kathryn Street.

Rouches said when police arrived, Hankins drove his black truck straight toward one of the officers, who fired at him in self-defense.

The name of the officer who fired the shot has not yet been released.
