Police recover pickup stolen 22 years ago
04:34 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
PORTLAND -- State police have recovered a 1977 Chevy pickup stolen 22 years ago.
The vehicle was brought in by a man seeking a vehicle identification number inspection.
No VIN number was visible in the typical location, on the dash, but troopers located one in a secondary, confidential location.
A check of the number indicated the vehicle was stolen and troopers asked the National Insurance Crime Bureau for verification.
The NCIB located a report by the Salem Police Department confirming the pickup was reported stolen Oct. 30, 1986.
The vehicle’s owner said it had been in his possession for two years. Troopers say he is cooperating with the investigation.
The truck is now worth only $5,000.
It has been seized by authorities and will be returned to its current legal owner, Farmers Insurance.
Officials report the Chevy is the second-oldest known recovered stolen vehicle in Oregon.
