About 3 a.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger stopped to assist what he thought was a disabled motorist at Hawthorne Avenue Southeast and State Street.
As he drove up to the man, later identified as Evan David Thomas Adams, the suspect suddenly jumped through the passenger window of the deputy's patrol vehicle, according to undersheriff Jason Myers.
Adams, 19, allegedly grabbed Wollenschlaeger. The brawl soon moved outside the vehicle and into the southbound traffic lane on Hawthorne Ave.
“The fight lasted for some time and Deputy Wollenschlaeger was finally able to deploy his police K9 partner Yo to assist him,” Myers said. “With the help of Yo and Corporal Don Parise from the Salem Police Department, the suspect was taken into custody.”
Wollenschlaeger suffered minors bumps and bruises during the fight but did not need medical attention.
Adams admitted to being under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms. He was taken to Santiam Memorial Hospital and treated for dog bites to his legs and minor scrapes to his face.
He was charged with assaulting an officer, interfering with a police animal, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, DUII, and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
Adams was lodged at the Marion County Jail with bail set at $32,500.
