Vandals hit Keizer neighborhood, cause thousands in damage

07:45 AM PDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008

Detectives in Keizer are looking for clues as to who's behind a vandalism spree late Monday night. They say at least 16 homes and cars were hit by pellets from a b-b gun, causing thousands of dollars in damage. Police say it's likely it was a group of teens, just trying to have fun. But they say those teens now face time in jail, if they're caught.

Just one of the over a dozen car windows police say vandals shot out with a pellet gun.

Salem McNary High School senior Alan Groesch is one of those who woke up on Tuesday morning to find a window on his car shot-out. "The bullet hole - you could see where it entered," Alan said. "The rest came out, shattered." Alan says the damage cost more than $200 to repair.

"I left it for my dad to clean up," Alan said. "I don't know what to think. I understand people having fun. But it's not supposed to hurt people."

Alan wasn't alone. All over Keizer's north side families woke tuesday morning to broken windows. All with the same break pattern: emanating from a small pellet hole.

"We have recovered some pellets from the scene," said Keizer Police Captain Jeff Kuhns. "This is big news. A lot of people were affected by this."

Police say vandals hit at least 16 windows, that they know about so far."I don't have a final tally at this time," Captain Kuhns said. "But reports continue to trickle in."

Police say vandals also broke out the windows at four bus stops, and they hit a pay phone, too. A lot of damage for just one night. "That's not like Keizer," said daily bus rider Kevin Marsh. "We're still a pretty small town, but it happens."

Still, victims and police alike say they're confident the vandals will be caught. "Somebody is obviously bragging about the damage they've done," said Captain Kuhns. "They're very proud of their actions."

Alan Groesch said he thinks the vandals will, " talk about it. Brag about it to their friends, that they made Channel 8 news."

Altogether the damage is estimated at more than $10,000. The vandals will be on the hook to pay that money back, if and when they are caught.
