Salem man drowns in Breitenbush River
11:39 AM PDT on Monday, August 18, 2008
SALEM, Ore. -- A 33-year-old Salem man has drowned in the Breitenbush River.
Marion and Linn county sheriff's deputies recovered the body of Anthony Hannigan about 7 p.m. Sunday after responding to a report of a man struggling in the water just north of Detroit.
Officials reminded swimmers that even in late summer, the strong currents can run deep, and the rivers often hide rocks and submerged trees.
Swimmers were urged to always swim with someone else, and try to stay in approved swimming areas close to shore.
