Heat may have lead to Salem cyclist's death

11:31 AM PDT on Monday, June 30, 2008

AMITY, Ore. -- High temperatures may have been a factor in the death of a 59-year-old Salem man who was on an organized bike ride in Yamhill County, officials said.

James Shelton was one of about a dozen riders cycling from the Oregon Capitol through rural Yamhill County on Sunday.

No one was with him when he began having trouble. Other riders found Shelton alongside the road and called for help.

Resuscitation efforts failed and Shelton was declared dead at the scene. Shelton reportedly had a history of heart problems.
